I pinned this great tutorial about 4 weeks ago. I made it last week. Follow me on Pinterest to find some other cool things I’ve pinned lately!

This one comes from The Farmer’s Nest.  What a great blog she has!

You need -

  • 8-10 ounces of good bar soap
  • grater
  • pot
  • 1 gallon water
  • glycerin (she uses this, but I substituted sweet almond oil).
  • container to put it in
  • *optional – shea butter and/or cocoa butter

Start with some good soap. She calls for an 8oz bar. I used 2 5oz bars.

Use your old box cheese grater, and grate those bars of soap up.

Put the soap shavings, 1 gallon of water, 2 tbs of sweet almond oil, 2 tbs of shea butter, 2 tbs of cocoa butter into a pot and turn it on to medium heat. Stir and warm until the soap all disolves. Remove from heat and set on counter. Her tutorial calls for 12 hours. I let mine sit for 24 to get it to the right consistency.

Oooo! Nice consistency! I vroomed mine up with my hand mixer real quick. Then poured it into a gallon jug and some soap dispensers.

Consensus …

It makes great hand soap.  Not great body wash.  There aren’t enough suds for body wash.  We really like this and plan on making it again in the future!  We won’t need any for quite a while, though, because we have a whole gallon of it!
